I need a quick tutorial on how to change things on a website using ftp through yahoo.?

I've used site builders in the past. Have some basic html knowledge but have no idea how to change things around in ftp.

Please also include some safeguards as to what ';not'; to do as I don't want to destroy what is already up there.

To get started with FTP, please read the article at:

Next, you will need to download an FTP program if you don't already have one. Go to the link below and download FileZilla. It's the FTP client I use and it's free:

You will only need to fill in 3 dialog boxes (at the top),

Host: you're site's IP address or domain name (no www)

Username: FTP username

Password: FTP password

Port: should fill in automatically, but if not the FTP port is 21



You will need to contact your server administrator for the above information.



Once you are logged in, the left pane is your local computer and the right pane is your webroot. You can navigate through directories just like on your local computer. You are able to create folders and delete files from here. To transfer, simply move files from the left to the right to upload or from the right to the left to download.



Be careful not to overwrite any files that you do not intend to overwrite. If you are upload a local file to a the same directory on the server and both files have the same name, the remote file will be overwritten.

Firstly to use ftp you will need an ftp client, one I used was filezilla but there are many out there. Your website will be stored in a folder on the ftp server, when you type in the address (say www.google.com) you will go to a folder on googles web server containing the pages.



Its important to note that the website is linked to the folder, not your main page on your website!



If you want to add new pages to the web site you just upload them to the ftp server (what your ftp client is for) and go to it to find out, eg www.mywebsite.com/mynewpage.htm



If you want to upload a new web site but keep the old one you can copy the files into a folder and just upload them, so you can still get on the old site with www.mywebsite.com/oldwebsitebackup/myold?br>

You could use an FTP software. The tutorial below should help you with using Filezilla FTP program.

After you login to the FTP client filezilla using



1. Your IP address (X.X.X.X)

2. Your FTP login

3. Your FTP password



You should be able to see the pages on your site. You can then drag and drop files to your server to upload or download them. Good Luck!
